This is the continuation of Janie’s story. Thinking she had survived and she was better off now, she turned right back around and ended up in another abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend.
Janie has never known a relationship that is not abusive and/or controlling. She met her ex-husband when she was still too young to understand what a relationship was or what she was getting into. She spent the next ten years in a marriage that she had no idea was abusive until she was out of it. Her story may sound hard to believe, but for her - and thousands like her - it is all too familiar. She still suffers with guilt and the aftereffects of the abuse, things that she will probably deal with the rest of her life:
She thought she had met the knight in shining armor that every little girl dreams of. She thought she had found the one, the one who would love her the way she deserved, who she could build a life and family with. The one who would protect her.
What she found was anything but the knight. She was not protected, she was not loved. The fairy tale that she had longed for became something else; what she thought was her dream come true became her nightmare.
It's October. It's the spooky month, the official start of the holiday season, when we feel the hint of the fall crispness in the air and you see the leaves begin to hit the ground.
But did you know that October is also domestic violence awareness month? It's a month to raise awareness and raise our voices about this terrible epidemic that plagues far too many people.
September is Suicide Preventation Awareness Month. Mental health awareness and suicide prevention is something that is very close to my heart.
I live with mental illness and I am a suicide attempt survivor.
There are things in my life that I wish I could change, things that if I could go back, I would do differently. Having and raising my 3 children is not one of those things.
Having my kids will always be the best thing that has ever happened to me.
Merriam-Webster defines the Arts as “painting, sculpture, music, theater, literature, etc., considered as a group of activities done by people with skill and imagination,” and Protest as “to show or express strong disagreement with or disapproval of something; something said or done that shows disagreement with or disapproval of something.” When it comes to the arts, there are three common forms of protest pieces: protest art (painting, photography, drawing, etc.), protest theatre, and protest writing.
"Remember the ladies."
Those famous words were spoken by Abigail Adams to her husband as he was at the Continental Congress, working on a little known document called the Declaration of Independence.
Tattoos.
When I say that word, I'm sure it invokes a lot of different emotions for many people. Some people think they're tacky, some people think they go against the Bible, some people think they're only associating with criminals. Some people think they're a waste of money. Some people think that people who get tattoos must just enjoy pain.
