It’s True! We Can Return to the Good Old Days

Some of the sci-fi movies feature time travel. In some of the films, like Back to the Future, folks traveled to the future and back in time.

The ability to travel through time is by far one of my favorite movie storylines. I mean, who – at least once in their lifetime – hasn’t wished they could turn back the hands of time or move into the future? Think about it: we could all become millionaires back in the day coming up with new inventions or we could set something right in our life that went wrong.

If we could travel into the future, we could see how the lives of our great – great grandchildren are going, and give them some solid advice. Wouldn’t time travel be great?

I believe we can all travel back in time but the wish to travel into the future is just that, a wish. I know you are thinking I’ve lost my mind. Well, that happened a long time ago and that is a story for another day. But, the fact remains we can travel back in time and it can be done through our memories. I submit that memories are a method of time travel.

I grew up on a farm in Harris County. I didn’t know it then but those were the “good old days” we all hear about. Life was simpler, and I really miss those days. I think about that old farm from time to time and those memories help me travel back to a different time.

It was a virtually carefree time for me. All I had to do back then was help out around the farm, attend school, participate in the extra curricular activities of my choice and enjoy life. My biggest worry back then was if I could start on the sports teams I was playing for.

My, how those times changed when I officially had to begin taking care of number one. There was so much to deal with: keeping a mode of transportation, keeping a roof over my head and bringing home a paycheck. I have to say, there have been far more of those times than the simple days on the farm.

I can’t tell you how many times in my life I’ve wished there was a time machine so I could return to many of those times in my life and make changes or do things different. The only problem with my method of time travel is I cannot change those things or do anything different. Pondering that thought, I realized I might not change things anyway because a number of those mistakes made have helped me become the person I am.

However, I still realize the days spent on that farm were among the best days of my life, especially the spring and summer days.

During the spring the work load on a farm tremendously increased with tilling the soil, planting the fields, taking care of the animals and so on. However, when the crops were finally harvested, things would slow down some and you could enjoy some of the summer days that remained.

One of my favorite things back then was heading down to the creek that made its way through our property and fish or take a dip to cool off. During the fall months, I loved to hunt. You know, doing all the things that country boys do. Like I said, the good old days. Today, we live in a fast-paced, get-it-done-now, full-of-worry world with lots of challenges, and on difficult days I like to step into my time machine and travel back to the good old days.

Why are those historic memories important?

Our memories are what and who we are. Memories are one of the things that helps us make decisions, act the way we do and love or hate as we do. Simply put, we are nothing without our memories even though there is no way to remember everything. Memories build up over a lifetime and are crucial to help to make us who we are. Memories help to make our personality and our character.

Everyone should have a place where they can immerse themselves in the sea of our life and relive all the special moments that we have captured with our mind’s eye. Memories are a priceless gift from God. So, given the opportunity, every one in a while we should jump into that time machine, travel back in time and see what we uncover.
