Perry RC Flyers ask for assistance in finding new site
At Tuesday night’s Houston County Board of Commissioners meeting, several members of the Perry RC Flyers Club asked the board for help in finding a new flying site.
A sanctioned club by AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics), members said they recently lost their flying field. They informed the commissioners that they are insured and have safety flying guidelines, and they also abide by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) rules and regulations.
The members said they have been in existence since 1990 and try to give back to the community. They have moved around in Perry, which they first started out in industrial park.
They said the majority of their club members are over age 50, but they encourage young children to get involved. Having moved around to six locations, members asked the commissioners for advice on finding a permanent location with about 5 acres. The members also showed off some of their model airplanes to the board.
Furthermore, during the meeting, the board approved the request from public defender Claudia Meier to hire Sara Meyers to fill the vacant position of senior assistant public defender, earning $77,563.20 annually. Additionally, they approved Public Works request to release the maintenance bond for McCarley Downs Subdivision, section 1, phase 3, and also to extend the cul-de-sac bond for one year to give them an opportunity to extend McCarley Downs Drive. The subdivision has been completed in accordance with the Comprehensive Land Development Regulations.
Other approvals included the beautification project at the SR96 and Lake Joy Road intersection, which was awarded to low bidder Dixie Lawn and Landscaping for a total of $99,600 (this is a SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) 2006 funded project); the intergovernmental agreement between Houston County, the Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Perry-Houston County Airport Authority concerning the county-built Georgia State Patrol Aviation Complex at the Perry-Houston County Airport for sole use by DPS (which was named in honor of Sheriff Cullen Talton); and the payment of all bills totaling $1,236,341.77.
All commissioners agreed that the new GSP Aviation Complex is a great asset to Houston County, middle Georgia and the state.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Petty Officer Second Class Alva Shell IV, USN (retired), and Technical Sgt. Christina Mabry. Mabry’s husband was also in attendance, as well as others, who were all presented with tokens by Chairman Tommy Stalnaker during the meeting and thanked for their service to the country and community. The Boy Scout Troop 550 was also present during the meeting and were given lapel pins.
Also, Stalnaker presented the Alzheimer’s Association with a proclamation recognizing November as Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month in Houston County and a proclamation to Belinda Enamorado, also recognizing November as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Awareness Month.
