Morrow, Upshaw win school board seats

Hoke Morrow and Bryan Upshaw will soon join the other cast and crew of the Houston County Board of Education.

Upshaw beat Tannya Duncan for the Post 7 seat. He garnered 5,524 votes to Duncan’s 2,912 and said he was just excited to be able to now give back to Houston County.

“It’s just a great school system and I’m just proud to be a part of it,” he said. “My mother was an educator. I came from the construction side of the community but the education side is of huge importance for us, because it gives back to the community.

“This community is the destination for the whole state of Georgia for people who want to relocate. And that’s primarily because of the great education program that we have.”

Morrow’s Post 6 victory was a bit closer. He pulled in 4,780 votes to Ashley’s 3,621. He, a former BOE employee back in the ‘90s and with a family tradition of educators – his father and his wife – said he was “excited to serve”.

“I’m also a little nervous,” he said. “Because I believe I’ve got the tiger by the tale. But I’m excited to learn. And I’m excited to get in here and get involved.”

His philosophy: “I treat every thing in an honest, common sense, trustworthy (manner). I feel like I’ve earned the people’s trust. Now I’ve got to live up to it. I’m just going to push forward and stand for what I believe is right, do what’s right and be fair to people and listen to them. I may not agree with them but I’m going to listen to them. That’s what I bring in my business. That’s what I bring to this.”
