Houston County Board of Education propose attendance rezoning for certain elementary and middle schools

The Board of Education could implement these rezoning changes at next month’s board meeting.

HOUSTON COUNTY — With Veterans Middle School opening in the 2027-2028 school year, the Houston County Board of Education has proposed attendance zone changes for some middle and elementary schools. These rezonings will also not affect high schools.

In the September board meeting, Deputy Superintendent Chrisopher Brown gave a presentation on the proposal.

He said at the meeting these proposed zones are to give Veterans Middle School a zone of its own which will relieve attendance at Perry and Bonaire Middle Schools.

“We want to make sure we are logical in what we’re doing and it makes sense, and we want it to be as student and community friendly as possible when we have any of these rezoning conversations,” Brown said. “We like to draw the lines on major highways, power lines, streams and corridors that make sense.”

Brown said their goal is to create similar “feeder patterns” that all feed into a particular high school.

Middle schools impacted:

Veterans Middle, Bonaire Middle, Perry Middle, Huntington Middle and Mossy Creek Middle

Elementary schools impacted:

Centerville Elementary, Eagle Springs Elementary, Kings Chapel Elementary, Matt Arthur Primary and Elementary, Tucker Elementary and Langston Road Primary and Elementary

Students impacted

Brown said the rezonings will affect approximately 160 elementary school students and 780 middle school students.

According to the School District, an estimated 555 students from Bonaire Middle School will be rezoned to Veterans Middle School, 35 from Huntington will be rezoned for Bonaire Middle School, 205 from Perry Middle will be rezoned for Veterans Middle School and 35 from Perry Middle will be rezoned for Mossy Creek Middle School.

125 students from Centerville Elementary will be rezoned for Eagle Springs Elementary School, 15 from Kings Chapel Elementary will be rezoned for Matt Arthur Primary and Elementary Schools and 25 from Tucker Elementary will be rezoned for Langston Road Primary and Elementary Schools.

Families of students in the impacted schools can file for a grandfathering. Brown said a student at these schools can finish its “grade band” under the grandfathering process. Families will be able to file at the end of the semester.

“For example, if a student has started second grade at a [impacted] school they can finish through fifth grade at that same school,” he said.

The proposal was presented as information only and the Board did not take any action. Although, action may be taken at their October meeting.

Brown mentioned there will be four community input meetings about these rezonings on Sept. 21, 22, 29, and Oct. 1.
