Schools Announce 2027-2028 Academic Calendar

The Harris County School District (HCSD) has presented the results of stakeholder input to the Board of Education, and the 2027–2028 academic calendar has been officially approved.
“Over the past few years, we’ve developed a formula for setting the academic calendar that works well for our district. With this approach, we aim to provide calendars two years in advance,” shared HCSD K–5 Curriculum Director David Dennie. “After gathering additional input from stakeholders, the Board of Education has approved the Version A calendar option for the 2027–2028 academic year.”

Key Dates for the 2027–2028 Academic Calendar (Version A – Board Approved):
• Students begin school on Friday, August 6
• Students return from winter break on January 5
• The last day of school for students is May 24
• Semester balance: 88 days (1st semester) / 92 days (2nd semester)
Spring Break is scheduled for early April and aligns with the Muscogee County School District calendar. This alignment is intended to minimize disruption for families and accommodate parents’ work schedules.
In developing the academic calendar, the district follows several guiding criteria:
• Teacher in-service days begin on the second working day of August
• 180 instructional days for students
• 10 professional learning days
• Spring Break aligned with Muscogee County Schools
• Student days divided as evenly as possible by nine weeks and semesters
• Consideration of federal holidays
• Input from stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and community members
Dennie added, “We appreciate everyone who took the time to share their insight so we could develop the best possible calendar for our students and staff.”
