The Flag Stands for Our Freedom and Much More
So many of my family members served this country, fought for the freedom we enjoy and gave so much. When I see our flag flying, I can’t help but think the stars and stripes mean so much to all of us.
So many of my family members served this country, fought for the freedom we enjoy and gave so much. When I see our flag flying, I can’t help but think the stars and stripes mean so much to all of us.
Every time I see a flag I think about our Veterans and our active military personnel. It is so important to honor those men and women because they fought for our freedoms and risked their lives to keep our country safe and preserve our freedoms.
My son-in-law is paying the price for his service every day. He has ongoing health problems due to his service, being deployed so many times he battles severe PTSD, but in many ways he is one of the lucky Veterans.
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in January 2025 it was estimated that 32,495 veterans were experiencing homelessness on a single night across the United States (. This figure represents the lowest number of homeless veterans since HUD began tracking in 2009 and marks a 56.1% reduction from the peak of over 74,000 homeless veterans in 2010.
Also, according to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), total veteran suicides in 2023 dropped by 44 in 2023 from 2022. However, the reports points out that about 17.5 veterans committed suicide per day in 2023.
I’m pointing that out for several reasons but mostly to get everyone to understand how our veterans have suffered and continue to suffer in this country.
Most veterans suffer from PTSD causing mental health challenges, social barriers and systemic issues that can make reintegration into civilian life extremely difficult.
My heart goes out to all of them who suffer and I pray for our veterans daily. So, I really wanted everyone to understand why the flag means more than
So, our flag represents those who serve, have served, have been wounded in service and gave their lives in service. It represents those who have fought and continue to fight for our freedoms. It symbolizes freedom, unity and the values of America.
The colors of our flag each represent something. The red in our flag represents strength or hardiness and valor, the white represents purity and innocence and the blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.
The layout of our flag represents something. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies and the stars represent our 50 states of the Union.
Our flag is one of the most recognized flags by everyone throughout the world because of its colors and because of the men and women who have answered the call each and every time the flag has been challenged.
Our flag not only represents all of our men and women who have fought and died while serving under it, it also represents all those people who have been liberated by it.
Our flag has always, and still does, stand as a symbol of hope and as a beacon of freedom.
While our flag represents each and every one of us, our country and our hope, it really sends a message about our veterans. It is the flag they serve under, risk their lives under and some die under.
Back to the topic of our flag. Every time I recite the Pledge of Allegiance, I find a renewed hope for our Nation and that is exactly what our flag stands for. It stands for hope, allegiance to our country, a place where we can decide who our leaders will be, a place where everyone sticks together and where the goal of our Nation is to be free and treated fairly by others as we are suppose to treat them. Our flag and pledge of allegiance stands for so much.
Having said all of that, our flag stands for America. We are America. As Americans, we must always stand together. We may disagree, but that’s okay, as long as we stand united on one thing, our love for our Nation and our fellow Americans.
As for me, I will always have the flag flying at my house, I will always look at it with pride and the understanding of what it represents.
As we approached the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the flag helps us remember what it really stands for.We must also remember our hometown heroes, who give of themselves, but that is a opinion for another day.
