$32,500 raised for Crimestoppers

“I know David’s looking down and dancing a jig.”

So said Susan Pierce of her late husband and in regard to the Eighth Annual David Pierce Memorial Community Luncheon to benefit Macon Regional Crimestoppers. It was held Wednesday at the Museum of Aviation.

The luncheon was presented by the Rotary Clubs of Houston County and not only helped raise money needed to support the program, it also helped recognize its success.

According to the handout provided, since April 2014 Crimestoppers tips have resulted – in the adult arena – in 4,253 arrests, 7,989 warrants cleared, 6,242 cases cleared, $634,588 in property recovered, $217,485 in recovered drugs and $610,665 rewards paid out. Its effects on students has been $11,775 in property being recovered, $4,195 in recovered drugs and $21,015 in rewards paid out.

“Criminals don’t stop at county lines or city limits, even though police departments do,” said Perry Police Chief Steve Lynn, one of a handful who spoke about the program through a pre-prepared video. “So we have to really interact with one another and Crimestoppers is a way to do that. It reaches out to a larger area than just your particular jurisdiction.”

Said Houston County Sheriff’s Department Maj. Alan Everidge, who also serves on the planning committee for the luncheon – also via the video: “I have seen big cases broken. People who were wanted for murder. Bank robberies. Cases as far away as they found people in Mexico by a Crimestopper tip that occurred in Warner Robins.”

The luncheon featured giveaways such as a fishing trip and hog hunt, as well as a silent auction and an auction of other items such as a framed/signed picture of Mickey Mantle and a picture featuring Braves pitching phenomena Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz.

The highlight of the luncheon, however, undoubtedly was the check presentation for future Crimestoppers efforts. It was in the amount of $32,500.
