Hummingbird made B-Line at me
With winter inexorably creeping in, the hummingbirds have left for warmer climes in south Florida, Mexico and Central America. They will return in March 2021 when warmer temperatures arrive. These birds possess marvelous navigation systems and, after flying vast distances, will return to our house next spring. Beverly loves her humming birds and keeps them fed from springtime until winter arrives.
The hummingbird is the world’s smallest bird. Its name comes from the humming sound made by its wings, which flutter at 70 times per second. An adult hummingbird weighs as much as a copper penny. Four newly hatched birds will fit into a teaspoon. Hummingbirds have a long hollow beak that suctions nectar from flowers. Their miniature nests in tree branches are so small you can hardly spot them. They can fly like helicopters. They dart upward, downward, backward and suddenly shoot forward at remarkable speeds. A spectacle to behold is several humming birds fighting over an outside feeder. They will dive-bomb each other and chase the offending bird at speeds that resemble F-15s in hot pursuit.
Recently, I was sitting in a chair at the edge of our garage when a flying creature made a B-line straight at me. I ducked, and then looked up to see a hummingbird hoovering in front of my face. Evidently it spotted my red shirt and thought I was a big red flower brimming with sweet nectar. The bird immediately returned to a tree limb, disappearing in the foliage.
On the fifth day of creation, God created the birds that “fly above the earth.” Ornithologists have identified 10,000 different species of birds. Birds are mentioned widely throughout the Bible, with both literal and metaphorical usage. One year and 10 days after the great flood commenced, Noah sent out a dove from the ark that did not return. This indicated the flood waters had completely receded. The dove was also used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit. In Matthew, after John the Baptist had baptized Jesus and the Savior came up out of the water, “the Spirit of God descended like a dove and lighted on Jesus.” Suddenly, God spoke from heaven, saying, “This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Evolutionists believe that mankind and all of earth’s creatures evolved over eons of time. They dispute the existence of a Creator and contend that all animal life, including birds, evolved from an inert one-celled protozoan that suddenly became alive. As for me and our house, we believe that God created the heavens and the earth and all life therein.
