The Callaway High Cavaliers will be looking to rebound this Friday night when the team travels to Fayetteville to play the Whitewater Wildcats after suffering a tough loss on the road against the Bowdon High Red Devils last Friday night by a score of 32-3.
The Cavaliers entered the contest against the Red Devils ranked as the number eight team in Class 3A and the Red Devils were ranked eighth in Class A. This was expected to be a game decided in the final minutes, but Bowdon had other ideas and took control of the game early.
The Red Devils forced the Cavaliers to punt on the team’s first offensive possession and began a solid drive. Once the the Cavalier red zone the Red Devils scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Connor Daniel, but a yellow flag for holding negated the touchdown. The Cavalier defense denied the Red Devils the end zone and Bowdon had to settle for a 23-yard field goal with 4:34 left to play in the first quarter.
Lady Luck frowned on the Cavaliers on the return kickoff and a fumble put the Red Devils in great field position on the Callaway 33-yard line and Bowdon hit pay dirt again. This time, the Red Devils scored in five plays to take an 11-0 lead with 11:52 left to play in the first half.
The Cavaliers fired back on the return kick. Beginning a drive at their own 15-yard line, Callaway drove the footbal down the field. Christon Kennedy, quarterback A.J. Williams and K.D. Lee were instrumental in the drive. The Cavaliers drove all the way to the Bowdon 6-yard line before a penalty forced the Cavaliers to call on Noah Hart to attempt a 23-yard field goal and he split the uprights to cut the Bowdon lead to 11-3 with 4:19 left to play in the first half.
Although both team put together some good drives in the remainder of the first half, it came to an end with the 11-3 score standing.
Bowdon wasted no time finding the end zone to begin the second half. Beginning the drive on their own 30-yard line, the Red Devils drove 70-yards to score in six plays and increased the lead to 18-3 with 8:10 left to play in the third quarter.
The Red Devil defense forced a three and out on the return kick and Hart had to kick from the shadow of the goal post and got off a good punt. The Red Devils took over the football on their own 49-yard line. Assisted by a 15-yard unsportsman like call on the Cavaliers, the Red Devils found the end zone again with 1:30 left to play in the third quarter to increase the lead to 25-3.
The Cavaliers were forced to punt again early in the fourth quarter and the Red Devils drove down the field to score with 10:23 left to play in the game and take a 32-3 lead with 9:59 left to play in the game.
The Cavalier record falls to 1-1 with the loss.

Up next for the Cavaliers
Tomorrow night, Friday, Sept. 4, the Cavaliers will travel to Fayetteville to play the Whitewater Wildcats in a non-region game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Wildcats are boasting a 2-0 record on the season going into the game against the Cavaliers after defeating McIntosh by a score of 14-0 last week and McDonough 57-8 in the season opener.
The Cavalier defense will need to ground Wildcat junior quarterback Case Roberts and senior running back David Duru to slow down the Whitewater offensive attack. Roberts was 7-of-5 passing against McIntosh for 70-yards and Duru rushed for 88-yards on eight carries. Roberts’ favorite target in the passing game is junior Chase Davenport. Davenport had two reception for 46-yards against McIntosh.
The Whitewater defense is led by Duru as well. He had 14 tackles against McIntosh.
