The first month of the softball season is gone and plenty of Houston County teams have started to find their stride.
The first month of the softball season is gone and plenty of Houston County teams have started to find their stride.
Here’s a roundup of last week’s softball:
Houston County
Houston County (7-3, 5-1 Region 2-6A) won their second region series last week, catapulting them over Coffee in the standings.
Their 11-1 and 9-0 victories during Thursday’s doubleheader, highlighted by Ann Marie DeFore’s 4-for-6 performance at the plate with two home runs, helped make up for a 2-1 road loss earlier in the week. Now they sit in second place below undefeated Lee County.
Next up is Thomas County Central, who has yet to win a region game.
Northside
Northside (8-6, 0-6 Region 2-6A) had a packed week with six games.
They posted a football final in their first game of the week against Howard, a 27-13 victory. The Lady Eagles tallied 27 hits and scored an astonishing 18 runs in the second inning.
Northside was swept by Lee County, who currently holds the top spot in the region, by a combined score of 36-1. They did pick up two more wins against Rutland (17-0, 12-0) to remain above .500.
This week they cut the slate in half, with just their region series against Veterans.
Perry
Perry (11-4, 4-0 Region 2-5A) bounced back from a rough start to the week by picking up two more region wins, keeping their perfect record intact.
The first game of the week was a 14-1 loss to Harris County; the Lady Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning and the rest of the game was doomed from there. The Lady Panthers returned the next day with a 16-9 victory against Union Grove with a phenomenal hitting performance, 15-for-33 (.454) complemented by Kate Murphey’s home run.
Perry split a non-region doubleheader at East Laurens with a 3-1 win and 4-1 loss, before they finished their week with an 18-0 win at Eagle’s Landing. They’ll host Warner Robins and Ola for region games this week, and travel to Taylor County for a non-region game.
Veterans
Veterans (6-4, 3-1 Region 2-6A) finally got through a region series, an easy sweep for an offense that had a rough late August.
The Lady Warhawks beat Thomas County Central by scores of 12-1, 10-2 and 12-3. Game 3’s 12-3 final was the only one that went the full seven innings.
This week they play Northside for their region series, with a non-region game against Jones County in between.
Warner Robins
Warner Robins (4-10, 1-3 Region 2-6A) lost their 10th straight game last week, including a region doubleheader against Ola.
Since posting six runs against Northside on Aug. 24, the Demonettes have struggled to put runs on the board, with only three scored last week.
They’ll look to get back on track against Perry and Union Grove this week.
Westfield
Westfield (5-6) has officially overcome their 1-5 start, now 4-1 since then after a 12-3 win against Pinewood Christian last week.
Six players in the lineup finished with two or more hits, and the team as a whole was 15-for-30 (.500) with only one strikeout.
This week the Lady Hornets play their first district games against Central Fellowship Christian Academy and Deerfield-Windsor, with a non-district game against Southwest Georgia Academy in between.
