Houston Lake Country Club celebrates 50th anniversary

Last Thursday, the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce congratulated Houston Lake Country Club on celebrating their 50th anniversary. Chamber board chairman David Campbell presented a plaque to owner Mark Byrd and his staff.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be a member here going on 25 years now,” said Campbell. “This place is a great example of service and great community partners. We at the chamber want to congratulate Mark Byrd and his staff for all of their great work.”

Houston Lake Country Club was formed in 1966 by a group of businessmen led by former Senator Sam Nunn. Byrd said the group was also made of members from the Tolleson, Hulbert and Davis families, who were from the Houston County area. It was then sold in 1986 to Chris and Beth Merman, and in 2013 is when Byrd and his wife, Amy, took ownership. Byrd said he doesn’t consider themselves to be owners of the club, but stewards.

“We believe Houston Lake is a special place,” said Byrd. “A lot of great memories and friendships have formed over the years here. We have more than 700 members. Our management and staff are world class and all the credit goes to them. My wife and I are beyond blessed to be a part of such great history and an asset of Houston County.”

Several elected officials spoke during the presentation Thursday. Perry Mayor Jimmy Faircloth congratulated Byrd and his staff for continuing the tradition and option people have for many years to come. Houston County Board of Commissioners Chairman Tommy Stalnaker commended Byrd and his staff for their hard work and dedication. He said Houston Lake Country Club is a true icon for the entire county. Former Georgia House Representative Larry O’Neal has been a member of Houston Lake for 42 years and is going on his 43rd year. He said every one of them has been special in his life.

“There are so many wonderful memories I have here,” said O’Neal. “Houston Lake is more than a business, and yes, we want it to be the most successful business, but it’s an institution of Houston County. When you think back of all the things and events that have taken place here, it’s just amazing. I was really touched when Mark said that he and Amy don’t see themselves as owners, but as stewards. That shows their passion for this community. Congratulations to them and their staff and here’s to another 50 years.”
