HOUSTON COUNTY — Roundabouts have become popular across the state. Houston County is among those that have added a few.

Drivers everywhere have most likely encountered a roundabout, even more so recently. It is a circular intersection defined by the principle of entering traffic yielding to vehicles on the circulatory roadway, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

In the state of Georgia, there are about 450 under construction. Two of those are on Highway 247. GDOT says other roundabouts in the area are “off system” meaning they are county or city led. Therefore, it is not officially listed.

GDOT started to install more roundabouts because it can offer a good solution to safety and capacity problems at an intersection, the department said. According to their data, accidents of all types have been reduced by about 35% at intersections where roundabouts have been installed. Injury accidents have also been reduced by 60%.

“Roundabouts can also offer high capacity at intersections without requiring the expense of constructing and maintaining a traffic signal,” the department said.

According to GDOT, other benefits of roundabouts include improved safety, safer speeds, increased efficiency and reduced congestion, long-term cost effectiveness and aesthetics. The department also said they significantly reduce pollution, noise impacts and fuel consumption.

GDOT also gave tips on navigating a roundabout:

  • Slow down when approaching a roundabout.
  • Choose the proper lane before entering the roundabout. Keep the vehicle in the same lane when entering and exiting the roundabout.
  • Yield to traffic on the left before entering the roundabout.
  • Enter the roundabout when there is a safe gap in traffic.
  • Keep speed low and stay in lane.
  • Large vehicles need more space in a roundabout. GDOT encourages drivers to be cautious and avoid driving next to or passing large trucks while approaching and maneuvering through the roundabout.
