With a handful of region series now behind (almost) every Houston County teams, the standings are taking shape.
Here’s a roundup of last week’s softball:
Houston County
The Lady Bears (11-5, 7-2 Region 2-6A) have won every region series but are still trying to get to that top spot in the region.
Currently in fourth place after losing 9-4 to Thomas County Central on Tuesday, Houston County has some ground to make up.
They did sweep the Thursday doubleheader, highlighted by Jaymi Kate McLendon’s first career home run to walk off Game 2, 11-2. HoCo won Game 1, 10-2.
To finish up the week the Lady Bears headed to South Commons Complex to play Gilmer, Buford and Cedartown on Friday and Saturday. The hitting in the first two games wasn’t up to their usual standard, but Felicity Curtis and Olivia Buffone each hit a home run to beat Gilmer 5-4.
They lost to Buford 7-3, and bounced back to win against Cedartown 13-1.
Next is region leader Lee County next week.
Northside
Northside (9-9, 0-9 Region 2-6A) struggled in their region series against Veterans last week, but they did pick up another win in the Crosstown Showdown against Warner Robins.
The Lady Warhawks outscored the Lady Eagles in all three games combined 50-4, and Northside was held scoreless in the doubleheader.
Against the Demonettes, Brynli Burch was 3-for-4 and brought in four runs in the 10-2 victory.
Next is Dublin and Thomas County Central.
Perry
Perry (14-5, 5-1 Region 2-5A) is the only team in Houston County leading their region race, but they did lose their first region game, 7-6, against Ola last week.
The Lady Mustangs scored four runs in the seventh inning to force extra innings, where they outscored the Lady Panthers 2-1 with help from two errors. Raynna Harrell hit a solo home run in the bottom, but it wasn’t enough.
The rest of the week, though, Perry beat Warner Robins (13-1) after a sloppy start, bested Taylor County on the road 5-1 and finished the week with a county rivalry game against Veterans, an 8-2 victory.
Next is Locust Grove and West Laurens.
Veterans
The Lady Warhawks (10-5, 6-1 Region 2-6A) are second in the region after a dominating sweep against Northside last week.
They outscored the Lady Eagles 50-4 in all three games, and earned 15-0 shutouts in the Thursday doubleheader.
On Friday, three errors and a 4-for-23 (.173) performance at the plate kept them down against Perry in an 8-2 loss.
Veterans also had a game against Marist on Saturday, an 11-3 loss after a weather delay.
Up next they’ll defend their second place spot against Coffee.
Warner Robins
The Demonettes (4-13, 1-5 Region 2-5A) are still having a hard time getting their offense off of the ground as their losing streak extended to 12 last week.
They did put runs on the board in every game, which is an improvement on the previous week, but the most they scored was two against Northside in a 10-2 loss.
Warner Robins also lost to region opponents Perry (13-1) and Union Grove (16-1).
Next is Treutlen, Eagle’s Landing and Locust Grove.
Westfield
Westfield (7-7, 2-0 GIAA District 3-3A) was the only team in Houston County who hadn’t played any of their district games, but they got off to an undefeated start last week.
The Lady Hornets started with a 15-10 shootout win against Central Fellowship Christian Academy. They were walked 12 times and batted 13-for-33 (.393) as a team.
Their one loss of the week was 6-2 at Southwest Georgia Christian Academy, who pulled away in the ninth with five runs.
Westfield breezed through their final game of the week against Deerfield-Windsor, 15-0, batting an astounding 17-for-23 (.739) in a contest that lasted 2.5 innings.
Next is Terrell Academy and John Milledge Academy.
